Rising Waves: The Second Generation of ESG Metrics and a Movement Toward Bringing ‘Dark Data’ to Light

  • Cynthia Figge, Co-Founder and COO; CSRHub

Virtually all members of the Sustainable Brands community are asking what changes they can expect in corporate disclosure of ESG metrics over the next few years, and how they can best prepare to transition toward a disclosure landscape that is less confusing, less scattered and more consistent over time. While the first generation of sustainability metrics has been driven mostly by custom self-reported data, combined with hundreds of surveys and ratings, a new wave of ESG disclosure trends is shaping up that promises to meet the needs of all stakeholders. This talk will outline the most important features of the next generation of ESG metrics and explain how ‘dark data’ may play a role in it.

Sustainable Brands:

Sustainable Brands is home for the global community of business innovators who are shaping the future of commerce worldwide. Since 2006, their goal has been to inspire, engage and equip today's business and brand leaders to prosper for the near and long term by leading the way to a sustainably abundant future. They do so by offering news and views from thought and practice leaders, live and on-line eventspeer-to-peer learning groups, a robust resource library, a solutions provider directory and more -- all designed to help brand, sustainability and design innovation professionals, social entrepreneurs and the eco-system of value network partners who support them, discover, co-create and successfully execute on new opportunities to profitably innovate for sustainability.

CSRHub’s Cynthia Figge Speaking at Future in Review

[fa icon="calendar'] Sep 29, 2016 1:48:13 PM / by CSRHub Blogging

CSRHub COO and Co-founder Cynthia Figge is speaking at the Future in Review (FiRe) Conference today at Stein Eriksen Lodge, Park City, Utah.

Fire in Review

Cynthia is hosting "Human Trafficking and the SNS GRS System in the UK" with Andrew Wallis OBE, Founder and CEO, Unseen UK.

With scant data yet an acknowledged growing problem estimated to affect 46 million victims and an illicit trade with profits of at least $150 billion per annum, combatting modern slavery is a critical problem facing societies around the globe.

Andrew Wallis OBE, Founder and CEO of Unseen UK, and Cynthia Figge, Cofounder and COO of CSRHub, discuss this global challenge. Helplines are part of the solution and the UK’s Modern Slavery Helpline and Resource Centre brings us closer to the eradication of modern slavery. Now, victims, the public, statutory agencies and businesses have access to information and support on a 24/7 basis. The next goal is to move to an easily remembered and internationally recognisable 3-digit or 4-digit helpline number. This means anyone can call, regardless of where they are in the world.

Adding to the data gathered from the helpline, redacted data from survivors, law enforcement data and business data, we will begin to be able to analyse and model those data sets to understand the nature, scale and typology of the issue and over time allow big data providers such as CSRHub and others to help us move predictive analysis in combating modern slavery.

New CDP Product-Level Supply Chain Data: Analysis and Recommendations Panel will cover:

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) has partnered with CoClear to analyze its product life cycle data from CDP’s Supply Chain Climate Change Information Request. Over 1,500 companies from 30 countries, representing 10 industry sectors, responded to the CDP questionnaire in 2013, 2014 & 2015. These companies provided life cycle emissions data on more than 300 products. Prior efforts to understand industry emissions often relied on “top-down” methods of analysis, examining high level, aggregate emissions data. With top-down analyses, it is often difficult to pinpoint with particularity the causes of carbon emissions – and which products and brands in a company’s portfolio offer the most potential for efficiency improvements. This analysis, on the other hand, identifies which life cycle stage cause highest emissions in each industry and how sectors track and manage these hotspots over time. The goal is to help industries identify efficiency improvements throughout their value chain.
