I’ve been going to Ross Lake for nearly three decades. A twenty mile long lake nestled in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state, the landscape is changeless. We still hike on the same trail to Desolation Peak, where Jack Kerouac spent 63 days during the summer of 1956 in a U.S. Forest Service fire lookout. The lookout remains in place to this day. We still catch rainbow trout that spawn in the numerous streams that flow into the lake. We still camp on an island where deer must swim to visit. This year’s contingent included a doe that coaxed her fawns born this spring to take their first swim to the mainland, and a 14 point buck with velvet splendor who spent a half day on “our” island. This place reminds me that there is grace off the grid, for a while. No internet, cell phone or radio. Just the sound of loons, waterfalls, wind, and the beauty of this land.
I hope you had a great July 4th.
